Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to question specific decisions from the official, following the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
